Happy Halloween

Hello Cabbagetown and welcome to another week of news, events and updates.

Unfortunately we've had some setbacks in the office with a persistent leak raining on our parade but that doesn't dampen our spirits and we are going ahead with our new Blog Format next week.

In the meantime, we've got lots to report on!

Firstly, we've had a great response regarding neighbourhood blogs and so far have a hefty list to share with you with a lot to talk about like Neighbourhood Safety and Halloween activities like, Scary-oke, Pumpkin Carving, a wheel of Misfortune, and more!

New blogs added this week:

http://uforchange.tumblr.com/
http://danieletdaniel.tumblr.com/

Do you have a Blog that caters to Cabbagetown? Send us an email at cabbagetownblog@gmail.com and we'll add your addition to our list.

Secondly, it is with a heavy heart that we report various criminal activities in the neighbourhood. The first is a report of gunshots heard in the park at the eastern end of Carlton St. and the second is a fatal stabbing of a woman near Winchester and Aberdeen.

Any one with information is urged to call Toronto Police at 416 808 2222 or email Staff Sergeant John Spanton -john.spanton@torontopolice.on.ca

Thirdly, the BIA Office at 237 Carlton St. is no longer holding office hours until further notice. We are undergoing renovations to correct our leaky roof.
If you need to get in touch with BIA Staff please email us at cabbagetownbia@gmail.com and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

And now back to our regularly programmed content.

Our Profile Spotlight is shining bright on Kevin Kung from Kendall & Co.
KENDALL & Co's boutique is brimming with great new arrivals, just in time for the Holidays.

When did you start at KENDALL & Co.?
I started with KENDALL & Co. two years ago when the company expanded into retail. I manage the retail operation. I have a design management degree from Milan and was an IT consultant in another life. You never know where life will take you!

Why did KENDALL & Co. start the retail business?
The annual Garden Tour and Tour of Homes attest to the fact that Cabbagetowners are proud homeowners. We created a home store that reflects their values. Our friends in the neighbourhood liked the idea of a store that would carry great gifts and also special items for the home. We felt the time was right for us to fulfill their wish.
The decision to hire a residential design firm is a complex one. The merchandise that we feature in the boutique expresses a certain aesthetic. Customers can see, touch and relate to items that might be part of KENDALL & Co.’s vision for their project. The shop allows us to engage customers in an informal way and provides an avenue whereby we can familiarize ourselves with their tastes and needs. Our shop merchandise is like the amuse bouche to the start of a delicious gourmet feast.
What do you offer in the KENDALL & Co. boutique?

Design goods need to have character to make it onto our shelves. Our boutique focuses on charming home accessories, chic stationery, hostess gifts and statement furnishings from international design companies. We also carry locally made goods: organic soaps, jewelry, pottery and monogrammed pillows. We developed a Riverdale Farm Gift Collection to help raise funds for our Farm. Likewise, we carry tea towels, the sale of which helps support the Cabbagetown Preservation Association. We also host “Promote our Locals” in-store events to showcase artists living in Cabbagetown. Potter Gerri Orwin, painter Victoria Hadden and The Toronto Guild of Spinners and Weavers have had their work showcased.

KENDALL & Co's boutique is brimming with great new arrivals, just in time for the Holidays.

In the coming weeks, our shop will explode with the absolute best holiday gifts and decorations.

On a related note, we offer gift-wrapping and local delivery.
Subscribers to our weekly "FYI" receive an email updating them on what is happening in our community and in our fine city. To have your name added to our FYI list please email shop@kendallandco.ca
We are launching online shopping that will make limited and exclusive items available for special order. http://kendallandco.ca/fyi/shop/

Beyond our boutique, our showroom has an illuminated wall of window treatment options; a display of our indoor and outdoor rugs; eclectic lighting and LED solutions and top quality custom furniture. Our designers welcome impromptu visits to our showroom. For a more thorough consultation, an appointment would be recommended.

Who are your customers?
Our core retail customers live in Cabbagetown but we also have loyal customers in B.C. and even across the Atlantic! We buy for Cabbagetowners because we too are Cabbagetowners. On buying trips, we ask ourselves whether our friends in the neighbourhood would like an item or whether it speaks to our sophisticated customers. When you shop at KENDALL & Co. your purchases help support environmental initiatives, AIDS research, fair-trade practices, artistic traditions and community non-profits for children and the arts.

Why do you enjoy working at KENDALL & Co.?

Change is constant at KENDALL & Co. New products, new displays and new store layouts reflect it. I also meet new people with whom I can nurture these new relationships.
I also get to shape the company’s identity. Our shop expresses who we are; what we like and what we care about as Cabbagetown residents. Our shop window is a window to the soul of the company and a reflection of the shared values of the great team at KENDALL & Co.
We have a vested interest in what we do and how we run our business because Cabbagetown is our home.
What sets KENDALL & Co apart?
Here is an example of how our customers receive personalized attention:
A customer, new to the neighbourhood, was interested in our wool rugs and our draperies. In the shop we narrowed down her top two choices and on her way out, I gave her a guide to a self-walking tour of the CPA's Cabbagetown People (http://www.cabbagetownpeople.ca)
One of our designers then brought the two rugs and some drapery samples over to her home. The sample rugs were laid down with the customer's existing furniture and the drapery samples were displayed together in natural light. All for the customer to see as a cohesive finish to her rooms. Windows were then measured; photos taken and the room was then restored to its original setting. A precise quote for rugs and draperies was then prepared and submitted to the customer for approval.

KENDALL & Co's boutique is brimming with great new arrivals, just in time for the Holidays.
People are treated with this level of full service because that is how we like to be treated.

If you would like your shop to be featured in this space, please send an email to cabbagetownblog@gmail.com to get in touch with us.

Although we will have to wait and see who will be showcased next week... I think it's time we formerly got introduced, don't you think?
I introduced myself early on when I first started in May (http://cabbagetownnews.blogspot.ca/#!/2012/05/fun-fresh-exciting.html <-- Hi!) but so much has happened since then and I want to share some great BIA items that I will be helping to implement in the coming year. We want to become a resource for community members and we want your help to grow our programs.

The more people I meet in the neighbourhood, the more I want to connect on a more personal level. Cabbagetown is a great place in Toronto to live, work, and play and the rest of the world needs to know about it.

A community that has evolved so much over the years and still has managed to maintain it's distinct personality is now facing change once again. I can't wait to see what's in store for us as a whole, because We Are All Cabbagetown.

Take some time to notice the beautiful scenery in Cabbagetown with all the leaves a million different shades of Autumn delight.

But stay safe and alert! No one is immune to violence, and we can all protect each other by being aware of each other and our surroundings.

Also, please be careful crossing the street as various accidents involving pedestrians have occurred in the last few days. Be aware and make sure drivers are aware of you when crossing the intersection of Parliament St. and Carlton especially.

Cyclists are more vulnerable on the road at night and are encouraged to wear a reflective vest after dark and have a light on both front and back sides of their bike.

Although, Halloween isn't till next week, the celebrations have already begun.
Join the gorgeous staff at Stout Irish Pub for a Family-friendly party during the day Saturday, October 27, 2012 and a ghoulish 2nd Annual Halloween Party at night.

Community News

It's nice to keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour and to say something before anything happens.

A warning to all business owners: a person or company posing as the Toronto Public Health department is calling businesses stating that they are obliged to purchase a first aid kit from them.

Cherry Bomb staff received two calls, the first saying that they had to purchase a first aid kit, a second from the "shipping department" asking to confirm the business address (which they declined to do.)

The callers refused to supply a name or phone number.

City staff have confirmed that this is a scam.

Please be wary, alert your staff, and do not fall for this scam.

Check out this link to a little video montage of the CYC kids cheering the Marathon on Sunday.
You will get an idea of the fun and of how much the cheering meant to the runners.
The Performing Arts kids did such a good job.
(If the cheering noise is too much, turn down the volume a bit.)

Cheers!

A Chill is in the Air

Welcome friends to another week of Cabbagetown News!

Great advances are being made for our new blog format. I hope to launch for the month of November.
The winds of change are in the air and we definitely feel it once the sun goes down.
I'm very excited to share the great new things the Cabbagetown BIA has in store for the new year but for now, you'll have to wait.

In the meantime, we've been reading our neighbours' blogs and they're fantastic!

There are so many great events that take place in our neighbourhood that one blog just can't cover them all. We've been linking other community blogs and they've been greatly received by our readers.

Do you know a blog that writes about Cabbagetown or is written by a Cabbagetowner?

Send us the link and we'll happily add it to our weekly email. The more the merrier because everyone's got something different to contribute.

Today, we share Part II of a two-part spotlight on Kendall Williams from Kendall & Co.

You can add our good friends on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/#!/KendallandCoDesignDecor for daily updates.

Kendall & Co.
Part II

What people need to know when hiring a designer?

I feel that you have to make a solid connection with the designer. If your instincts tell you that this is not the right person for you, then it is best to move on to someone else. Some individuals are designers by nature but there are others who just fill a seat. What you have to find is the individual with a special mix of creativity and business acumen. A designer has to be able to clearly articulate ideas and then execute them in a reasonable time frame and on budget. This is a rare combination of abilities in the artistic community.

What types of services do KENDALL & Co. provide?

First and foremost we are a creative firm. We help our clients distinguish between what is ordinary and what is spectacular. We welcome clients with all types of design needs who are impressed with both the breadth and depth of our services:

• Colour Consultation
• In-Home Design Consultation
• Space Planning
• CAD Drawings
• Custom Furniture & Upholstery
• Custom Window Treatments
• Custom Floor Coverings
• Wall Décor and Art Selection
• Lighting and LED Solutions
• Sourcing of Furnishings

From kid's room to boardrooms, we are well versed in the complex designs of kitchens, bathrooms to custom-built homes.

We offer a complimentary “meet and greet” at our design studio where we thoroughly explain our services and process to determine a package particular to your situation.

A retainer enables us to move forward with full concepts, detailed options, measurements, technical drawings, shopping list, trade quotes, budget and timeline for you.

We can supplement our Design Package with Project Management Services. That means we supervise the trades to carry through according to the approved design, budget and milestones. We also mitigate contingencies that may reveal themselves during construction. We coordinate the purchase and delivery of design products, available exclusively through our industry relationships. Above all, we communicate with you and ensure progress for you.

Who are your clients?

We work with a varied clientele all of whom share a desire for intelligent and cohesive design. We enjoy working with clients who live in Cabbagetown as the proximity and commonalities help with the flow of the project.

What are the advantages of your business over others?

KENDALL & Co. is a convenient "one-stop shop" with the resources and talent to comprehensively design your home to reflect your style and budget.

We are always open to the ideas and desires of our clients so the outcome is original and personal. But when clients give us the latitude to push the envelope and stay true to our professional vision, the results are phenomenal.

We advise our clients to be fully aware of the truths of renovations especially those involving older houses. I bring personal integrity and an extensive experience in design and construction to the proper stewardship of your home. Those who contract KENDALL & Co end up with an increased enjoyment and value of their property.
Cabbagetown Resident Designer, Kendall Williams
I am also a Cabbagetowner who invests time and money in the future of our community. My independent business sponsors the good work of various local nonprofits every year. Statistics show, on average, that such organizations receive 250% more support from small business owners than from larger businesses. Whenever possible we also buy local, such as Nettleship’s Paint and Home Hardware on Parliament St. I have my business lunches in the neighbourhood and it shows on my cherubic figure.

Next week, we will get to know Kevin Kung from Kendall & Co.
Stay tuned to find out how this dynamic duo has succeeded in transforming many spaces.

And WE ARE WISCONSIN is a brilliant documentary that follows the unfolding of public outcry against Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s controversial budget-repair bill over 18 historic days in 2011.
